Lake Chelan

Yesterday was spent in a blur of activity, first we (rather I really, someone else slept in, and in, and in...) got up and fed the neighbors (Dar, Lady and General the shetland pony) and then sat on the front porch. All.Day.Long. :-) Porch sitting is hard work let me tell you, it's not for everyone. I veered slightly from traditional methods and read a book (over achiever), and it's the first time since I've been, maybe 12 years old, that I've sat and read a book in one day, with a few brief interruptions that mainly concerned eating some of the best fruit I've had in ages (cherries, blueberries, peaches etc). The peaches are what led to today's excursion, because last night I ate the last one from the Hauff Orchard that I'd visited on my way to Leavenworth Sunday
I've stopped at at least a dozen (that's just the ones I'll admit to...) fruit stands since I left OC, have eaten more peaches than anyone should ever want to, and I can confidently say that nothing compares to the Hauff peaches. Of course, it could also be that Helen Hauff works the stand herself each day and happens to be one of the sweetest ladies you can imagine, she stands about 4' 6" and every inch of her is a smile. My first visit, she took to me as if I were a relative come to visit not some stranger off the road, asking lots of questions about my travels, pulling out her freshest basket of peaches and once she'd finished picking out the ripest of the bunch insisted on walking me to my car where we hugged goodbye with a promise that I would return. Which I made good on to both our delight.

After the goal was met, bag of peaches in the front seat along with some peach habanero pepper jam that I couldn't pass up. It was up to Lake Chelan which runs for miles and miles into the Northern Cascades. We bummed around the lake for a bit and then headed south back to Roslyn.
